Banal Objects

-->
Recently read an article in the June 1st edition of the “The Nation” by Barry Schwabsky title “A Million Little Pictures”. In the article, he discusses a project done by Robert Smithson, of photographing ever day objects (see Marcel Duchamp). The discussion revolved around the Smithson view of postindustrial culture through the eye of the camera. The author of the article claims that Smithson’s alienation allowed him to “perceive that things, made or natural are mere photographs of themselves and that these photographs are essentially “still” excerpted from the film that is time”. The writer goes on to explain that he thought that it clear that for Smithson, the image is always of something that was already an image.

The concept that objects are already an image seemed to catch my attention, as I seem to always be shooting objects in ways that cannot be considered the norm. Further in the article the writer states “Artists have perennially had the feeling that they are merely the channel for something that is already art (my emphasis). Well that blew me away. Although I have long believed that I was the artist now I think (but am not sure) that I am merely the editor of what is already art. (Can editing be considered art?)

Any way that is the thought that screamed through my head and as the editor of art below here is some more work.

Dang these sins! See you next time
